The terms light, medium, and dark roast are such ubiquitous coffee descriptors that you might be surprised to learn that there is no industry standard definition for roast levels that is consistent across companies. This means that one company’s “light roast” can be a very similar roast profile to another company’s “dark roast.” Just when you thought coffee couldn’t get any more confusing!!!
In truth, there are no set boundaries as to what defines a light, medium, or dark roast. Because of this, you’ll notice that instead of categorizing all of our coffees by a particular roast level, we focus on tasting notes that capture a coffee’s overall flavor profile, texture, sweetness, and aftertaste.
At the end of the day, our goal is to provide you with a balanced and sweet cup of coffee. Read on for some suggestions on navigating our menu to find what brings you the most delight in your cup.
Do you typically drink a coffee that is labeled a “dark roast” coffee? If so, our French Roast is a wonderful place to dive into our menu. This certified organic year-round blend is characterized by notes of dark or bittersweet chocolate, dried fruit, and toasted marshmallow with a mellow acidity and smoky finish.
Most of our coffees tend to land in what folks might refer to as “medium roast” coffee. Our intention behind every roast is to showcase and balance the inherent sweetness of the coffee. We avoid saying “medium roast” because within that range there is a spectrum. Some coffees may taste lighter and brighter than others, but superficially, they appear to be the same roast level. If you want to find a coffee for you, we suggest reading the tasting notes.
Typically, our *Blended Coffees* tend to be medium roast. Our "Hair Bender" blend is a popular medium roast known for its smooth body and rich flavors, including hints of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The medium roast offers a balanced flavor profile that brings out the best of both the bean’s natural flavors and the roasting process. It has a slightly darker tone than a light roast but retains more of the complex, bright acidity found in lighter coffees.
Our *Single Origins* are perfect examples of lighter roasts that allow the true essence of the beans to shine through. Stumptown's lighter roast offers a brighter, fruit-forward flavor profile for coffee lovers who enjoy a more delicate and aromatic cup. Light roasts are roasted for a shorter time, preserving the natural acidity and unique characteristics of the beans, such as floral, citrus, and berry notes.
Conclusion
Stumptown Coffee Roasters caters to every coffee drinker's preference by offering a range of roasts that highlight different aspects of flavor. Whether you’re drawn to the boldness of a darker roast, the balance of a medium roast, or the brightness of a lighter roast, Stumptown ensures that each cup delivers exceptional quality and a unique coffee experience.
